Chicken or the Egg?

Chicken or the egg, which came first? Let’s define the question before proceeding; are we talking about a chicken egg or an egg generally, irrespective of the species contained? In the case of the latter, egg-laying creatures, including fish, reptiles, and other fowl, predate the existence of the modern chicken; 1 point for the egg.

In defining the question, we have our answer for the former definitional approach as well. In the case of a chicken egg, some precursor fowl (one genetic mutation / generation removed) must have laid an egg containing the first chicken. This is assuming that the precursor fowl didn’t mutate into a categorical chicken within its lifetime. This also assumes distinguishing between a chicken and chicken embryo, otherwise the first chicken and its egg would come into existence simultaneously.
